About this Event
During this talk, we will:
- Analyze the historical influence of the John/Joan case on contemporary pediatric intersex surgical practices and evaluate how flawed scientific assumptions shaped modern standards of care.
- Apply the four core principles of bioethics—beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and bodily autonomy—to pediatric intersex surgery so we can critically assess the ethical legitimacy of non-emergent genital interventions in intersex children.
- Examine how social conformity, medical pathologization, and informed consent practices influence long-term psychosocial and physical outcomes for intersex individuals, informing more ethical, patient-centered approaches to care.
