Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and affects individuals residing in Mexico, Central America, and South America. It is estimated that 288,000 individuals are living with Chagas disease in the United States, the majority of whom are not diagnosed. Diagnosis requires two serologic tests based on different antigens and/or techniques. Data suggests that the sensitivity of serologic assays varies by geographic location, possibly due to T. cruzi strain difference. In addition, workflow changes in commercial reference laboratories can result in confusion for the ordering clinician. This webinar will review basic concepts of Chagas disease testing, discuss new testing modalities, and offer an approach to diagnosis of Chagas disease.
