Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and is endemic to Mexico, Central America, and South America. Although it is transmissible from mother to infant during gestation, many providers are not testing mothers who are at risk for Chagas disease. Identification in their infants and children is critical as early treatment prevents the development of potentially fatal cardiomyopathy or digestive system dysfunction years after the acute infection.
